SMOKE AND CO SAFETY – HOLIDAY SAFETY ADVICE
Fire and CO risks
In touring caravans, motorhomes and static homes/caravans, there are many potential sources of fires such as portable LPGs/paraffin heaters, electrical overload hazards, charging lithium batteries, cigarettes and discarded matches to name a few. Fires can spread rapidly due to their enclosed spaces and potential for flammable materials. Likewise, CO, is also a serious concern. This is an odourless, colourless gas that is generated by the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon fuels (e.g. due to a poorly ventilated or defective gas boiler or cooker), CO can make you seriously ill and possibly be fatal if inhaled in sufficient levels.
Requirements for touring caravans and motor caravans
All new touring caravans and motor caravans approved by the NCC must be fitted with either a minimum of one approved smoke alarm and one approved CO alarm or a combined smoke and CO Alarm can be used.
The requirements for smoke and CO alarms are as follows:
• Smoke alarms must comply with the requirements of BS EN 14604:2005
• CO alarms must comply with the requirements of BS EN 50291-2:2019
• If combined, they should comply with BS EN 50291-2:2019 and BS EN 14604:2005
Please refer to the below list of Kidde products that have obtained NCC’s ‘verified component’ certification, providing holidaymakers with the reassurance that fitting these alarms will help them to meet the required level of protection.
